Access to Kodiak's harbors will be limited when dredging work begins Monday in a project to deepen the mouth of the St. Paul Harbor.

Kodiak harbormaster Marty Owen says he's tried for years get the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to give the go-ahead for the dredging.

Owen says large boats scrape the bottom during low tide.

The Kodiak Daily Mirror says Western Marine Construction Inc. has been contracted to do the work.

Project manager Joseph Zech says the St. Paul Harbor dredging is expected to take a couple weeks.

The company will then dredge the north entrance of St. Herman Harbor in a job that is expected to take a month.
