The new Russian Jack Springs Park officially opened up Saturday morning with a ribbon cutting ceremony after a temporary hiatus due to construction.

In February, the Anchorage Park Foundation announced the winners of a contest to name the polar bear slide, which is the center piece of the new park and can be seen by driving by on Pine St.

Paradise Iona Pearson and Natalya Sailiaga, first and third graders from Chester Valley Elementary, named the polar bear "Nola."

"It took us a few years to engage the community and decide what we wanted to do and this park area, which was fairly abandoned and quite yucky and so it was neighbors that got to decide what they wanted," Beth Nordlund, Executive Director with Anchorage Park Foundation, said.

The Alaska State Legislature, the Rasmuson Foundation, and the Anchorage Park Foundation funded the park renovation.
