Proposed Smoking Ban on Kodiak Island All but Dead

A proposal to ban public smoking on the Kodiak Island Borough is all but dead after one of the principal backers dropped his support.
   
The Kodiak Daily Mirror reports that assemblyman Tuck Bonney announced Thursday he is abandoning his effort to put a borough-wide smoking ban on the fall municipal ballot.
   
Bonney and assemblyman Aaron Griffon did much of the legal legwork drafting the proposed smoking ban before it received its first assembly vote last week. That vote, 5-1 in favor, moves the proposed ban to a public hearing on Thursday.
   
If approved by the assembly at the public hearing, it would appear before voters for a fall vote. The smoking ban would take effect only if voters approve it, which now seems like a distant possibility.
