Every year, the Lion's Clubs of district 49a provides funding for Camp Abilities, a program that adapts summer camp activities for children with visual impairments.
The annual program is taking place in South Anchorage and exposes kids to a variety of sports with access to professional facilities and trainers.
Activities, like beep baseball, are adapted so the campers can lead a healthy lifestyle while also giving them a way to participate in school sports programs instead of sitting on the sidelines.
"They have the options to participate in whatever activities they want without those options the kids could just become sedentary and not participate with their peers you know they get isolated," Justin Haegele, co-Director with Camp Abilities, said.
Organizers work in tandem with UAA, the YMCA, and The Dome to provide campers with specialized sports training while having fun.
"It makes me feel like less of the guy, 'oh the blind kid,' that everyone has to look out for," Dalton Riser, camper, said. "It really does give me a one up in the confidence factor."
