A lot of money is expected to flow in the 2014 race to represent Alaska in the U.S. Senate. Three people -- Democratic incumbent Sen. Mark Begich, as well as Republican challengers Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell and Joe Miller -- have announced their candidacy, and each is required to report where their donations are coming from and how their money is being spent.

Second-quarter reports filed with the Federal Election Commission on campaign receipts and disbursements reveal a variety of details about the candidates' war chests and game plans.

  • Sen. Mark Begich (D) raised $928,916.87 in the second quarter and has $2,048,402.93 cash on hand.
  • Joe Miller (R) raised $18,315.28 in the second quarter and has $317,454.92 cash on hand.
  • Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell (R) raised $120,270.49 in the second quarter and has $130,349.31 cash on hand.
  • Begich and Treadwell have already attracted far-flung support, drawing maximum donations from dozens of states; major donors from California, Massachusetts, Texas and Washington have been particularly active. Miller has also drawn support from Texas and picked up two donations from Guam.
  • Travel expense reports, including hotels and restaurants, show Begich's campaign has traveled to several states for campaign events: Arizona, California, Oklahoma, Texas, Washington and the District of Columbia.
  • Begich's campaign reports $635.54 for refreshments at Brown Jug Warehouse, and $212.50 at the Anchorage Golf Course Pro Shop to buy golf balls for a fundraiser.
  • In three separate buys through D.C.-based Buying Time, Begich spent a total of $131,455.06 on radio ad campaigns.
  • Miller's campaign paid $3,500 to the Camden, S.C.-based Buckley School for "candidate training." According to its website, the school offers courses in public speaking, executive training and disciplined thinking.
  • Miller paid $94,083 to the State of Alaska as part of a legal settlement.
  • Begich and Treadwell have already attracted far-flung support, drawing maximum donations from places like Washington, Florida, Tennessee and Texas; Miller picked up a couple donations from Guam.
