State Seeking New Voter Registration System

The state is soliciting proposals for a new voter registration system.

Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell says the current system is old and it's hard to make minor changes to it without the risk of crashing the system.

He says the state is seeking a new system that would make it easier for voters to register or update information online. A goal is for each precinct to have an electronic poll book, which would provide "real-time" updates of voter history and the ability to import and display a voter's photo from the Department of Motor Vehicles. Treadwell says this would increase security at the polls but a photo ID would not be a requirement.

He has said he doesn't support a voter ID bill pending in the Alaska Legislature.
