Borough Plans for New Town Site Raising Concerns

The fastest-growing region in Alaska is planning for a new town site. But some residents question the location and whether this is a well thought-out idea.

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough is working on a conceptual plan for Point MacKenzie, near the new Goose Creek prison. It includes a plaza, parks, school, air strip and mix of housing.

Borough chief of planning Lauren Driscoll says planning is in the early stages but aimed at getting ahead of the growth expected if Knik Arm bridge is built.

Even without the bridge, she says this is an area people are moving toward.

Some Point MacKenzie residents say they aren't against development, but they worry about the impact on wetlands and a wildlife corridor.
