A franchise pizza restaurant and bar in Midtown Anchorage has closed, according to officials with the national chain.

The Alaska Journal of Commerce reports that the Boston's Restaurant and Sports Bar at 2830 C St. opened in spring 2002. Franchisee Don McMillan said his firm, Great White Alaska LLC, was permitted to open up to three restaurants in the Anchorage area, depending on the success of the first one.

Katie Borger, a national communications manager for Boston's, says the Anchorage restaurant's license agreement expired in February, and that its owners decided they didn't want to be in the hospitality business.

According to Borger, the national chain had a great relationship with the Anchorage franchise. Its closure leaves Fairbanks with the only Boston's restaurant in the state.

The Fairbanks location drew controversy in December, when manager Dusty Westbrook posted a Facebook comment criticizing military members for expecting discounts on their food. The incident led to Westbrook quitting the restaurant, as the national chain apologized for his statements and the franchise pledged to donate part of its proceeds from pizza and flatbread sales to the United Service Organization.

Channel 2's Ashleigh Ebert contributed information to this story.
