A large park in east Anchorage has been plagued with 16 suspicious fires since August 5.
The Anchorage Fire Department said someone seems to be intentionally setting the fires in the Russian Jack Springs Park area.
Brian Balega, a fire investigator with the department, said the recent rains and current dampness in the woods ruled out natural fires.
"In order for this fire to have occurred," Balega said, "It would have to have human help."
Thirteen crews responded to the first call Monday night. Police questioned a white male with a pony tail in the area, and have called him a person of interest.
More fires were reported within the park Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Officials said the majority of the fires occurred between 8 p.m. and midnight, with the exception of the August 8 fire, which happened around 8 a.m.
According to officials, none of the fires got out of hand, but people who live in the area are worried.
83-year-old resident Bill Stewart said he's afraid a potential fire could spread to his home on Pine Street due to the park's dense vegetation.
"I'm homebound," Stewart said, due to a punctured lung and oxygen tank. "(I'm) not able to fight a fire."
"We've got active cases going on. We're just trying to get a handle of what's going on here," Balega said. "Our idea is trying to figure out where do we go from here."
Anyone with information about the fires is asked to call the Anchorage Fire Department's Arson line at 907-267-5060.
