Reduced ferry service is affecting high school athletic teams in southwest Alaska.
Kodiak teams must fly or take the ferry for off-island competitions. KMXT reports (http://bit.ly/1fonzY6 ) that for years, the state ferry system has given the school district a deal, making ferry-going more economical than flying. But with fewer ferry sailings, with the Tustumena laid up for repairs, teams now must look at the more costly option of flying.
Kodiak High School Athletic Director Bryan Ferris estimates an additional $27,000 being spent on football travel alone.
The cross country team had to cancel a trip and rearrange its schedule. The swim team is cutting the number of people it brings on trips.
Teams will have to fundraise to make up the difference in what's already been budgeted for travel.
