The Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority got a surprise visit from the "Mothers Against Mercury" environmental group and other protesters at its board meeting on Wednesday.

During public testimony, different groups lashed out at the trust for leasing its lands for coal mining.

"We know that coal mining, coal extraction and coal burning is bad for our physical health and our mental health," Castle Mountain Coalition's Jamey Duhamel said. "If you do not know that by now you have not done your due diligence for the people of Alaska."

Trust CEO Jeff Jessee says the board members have a fiduciary responsibility to make money for mental health services. Jessee also says any type of coal mining will strictly adhere to state and federal regulations.

"Everyone's worried about environmental impacts," Jessee said. "That's why there's regulatory processes in place. That's why permits and licensees are required to meet the conditions of those permits."

The trust's board members look to make a profit for mental health services but protesters hope they'll find some other land to put investments.
