Ketchikan Assembly Backs Bridge to Airport

The Ketchikan Gateway Borough Assembly has officially endorsed a bridge to its airport on a neighboring island. However, members will take improved ferry service if the state offers it instead.

The Ketchikan Daily News reports the assembly backed the bridge, which congressional leaders last decade dubbed the poster child of pork projects and called the "Bridge to Nowhere."

However, in its resolution, the assembly also said it would accept improved ferry service between Revillagigedo and Gravina islands, if the state transportation department decides to take no action on the bridge.

Assembly member Todd Phillips voted against it, and said it was a mistake to support anything but a hard link to Gravina Island, where the airport is located. He says the assembly is "kowtowing."
