It's one of the annual rites of being Alaskan, the Permanent Fund Dividend check.
The payout is set to be announced September 18th, but I couldn't wait.
As part of my process, I used the dividend distribution formula that's set by state law.
I took the average of the fund's income over the past 5 years, multiplied it by 21%, and divided by 2.
That comes out to $604 million dollars.
Next I took the $604 million dollars and subtracted the $1.49 million dollar average of prior year obligations, expenses, and PFD operations that has to be paid out.
Working with $602,505,069.66, I divided the number of eligible applicants.
PFD director Dan DeBartolo says they are still working on the final numbers, but they do know that 7,000 less Alaskans applied this year.
Based on last years total of 646,805 eligible Alaskans, the magic number I came up with is:
$931.51.
So how far could you stretch those 931 PFD dollars?
At Kaladi's barista Megan says Americano's are the beverage of choice which with almost $1,000 dollars you can get a lot of cups
"$931 dollars divided by $2.50 a cup, that would be 372 cups," said Megan.
Tires in Alaska are always popular especially around PFD time.
Johnson's Tires store manager Richie Long says my prediction would give you a complete set.
From wheels to meals, you can never go wrong with a hot dog.
Grill guru Michael Anderson of MA's Gourmet Dogs says $931 dollars would give you quite a bit.
"Based on my price, based on your estimate, i would say 149, which is a great deal."
All deals, if my prediction is correct, I'm hoping my $931 dollars will cover.
Last year a little over 610,000 people got an $878 dollar permanent fund check.
This year's average will be the last to include 2009, when the fund posted a $2.5 billion loss in statutory net income.
