Anchorage firefighters rescued 12 people, almost all of whom were asleep, from a fire at a Spenard apartment complex without injuries early Tuesday. Anchorage Fire Department units responded to the fire, on the 2300 block of Jefferson Avenue, at about 3:30 a.m. Officials say the fire started in one unit’s living room or kitchen. Crews at the scene say the unit’s owner woke up and realized there was a fire in his apartment, then shut his bedroom door and called 911. When Station 5 firefighters arrived at the scene, they saw the man standing at his window, and immediately grabbed a rescue ladder to pull him out of the burning complex. Firefighters say the other 11 occupants were still asleep, so crews went inside the complex and knocked down doors to get the other victims out. According to AFD, the man is lucky to be alive because his smoke alarm didn’t have a battery in it and wasn’t functional. This is a developing story.
