Police believe a 27-year-old woman fatally shot her boyfriend Friday night at a 54th Avenue residence.
Bonnie Degenstein told police she was drinking with her boyfriend – 24-year-old Ryan Tamborrino – and that the two were playing with guns.
Degenstein called police around 10 p.m. to report that something went terribly wrong: a shot was fired, and Tamborrino was killed.
"I can't believe I did this," she said when police arrived, according to court documents.
Officers said the residence smelled strongly of alcohol and said they found an open bottle of vodka that was nearly empty; there was a shot glass of vodka still on a table.
On the floor near a couch, there were two handguns: one that is .40 caliber and another that is .45 caliber, and a single shell from each weapon was on the ground.
Police said Tamborrino was shot in the forehead and bleeding profusely when they arrived, but he was still alive.
He was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead.
Next of kin has been notified.
"You can be held responsible for an accidental shooting, especially when you're under the influence of alcohol," said APD spokesperson Jennifer Castro.
Degenstein was arraigned Saturday in Anchorage and charged with second-degree murder.
According to documents filed during the hearing, a witness who knew Degenstein and Tamborrino said a fight broke out earlier in the week "because she found out he was dating other women."
The witness was not home at the time of the shooting but arrived shortly after officers. She described another similar fight a couple days before the fatal shooting.
A neighbor who described himself as a friend of Tamborrino told he went to sleep early Friday and did not hear the shooting. But he said he was unaware of Tamborrino owning handguns.
What exactly happened remains unclear, but police cautioned against drinking alcohol around firearms.
"Playing with a loaded gun while you're intoxicated is a reckless and dangerous thing to do," Castro said. "Unfortunately it can result in a situation like this."
