State Reviews Radiology Company's Certification

A Fairbanks radiology business that has operated for years will undergo state review this week in a "certificate of need" hearing.

North Star Radiology may be required to obtain a certificate of need, which usually happens before a business is launched.

The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services uses the certificate process to regulate health care competition.

Institutions such as hospitals have argued that private clinics should not be allowed to skim off their most lucrative business because they are not required to provide services to people who can't pay.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (http://bit.ly/18LTMpE) reports that an exemption turns on whether North Star Radiology is classified as an "office of private physicians" or an "independent diagnostic testing facility."

The hearing is Tuesday.
