Alaskans who suffered damages from severe storms in November and flooding in the Kenai Peninsula Borough now have one month in which to apply for state aid for those incidents. According to a Tuesday statement from Jeremy Zidek, a spokesperson for the state Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, Alaskans face a Jan. 17, 2014 deadline by which to apply for disaster recovery funds and temporary housing assistance. Applicants may do so at state-run temporary Disaster Assistance Centers in affected areas, by phone at 1-855-445-7131 or online at DHSEM’s website. “Before applying for Individual Assistance online, through the hotline, or in person at a Disaster Assistance Center, applicants should develop a description of damages and/or losses, and gather ownership and insurance documents, personal identification, and proof of occupancy, such as a utility bill, to assist with the application process,” Zidek wrote. According to Zidek, as of Monday state officials have received 162 applications as a result of the November storms, as well as 52 applications related to the Kenai Peninsula Bureau flooding. “The Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management encourages everyone with damages from the 2013 November Storms or 2013 Kenai Peninsula Floods to apply for disaster assistance,” Zidek wrote. Gov. Sean Parnell had declared state disasters in the two incidents in November.
