A woman accused of killing a man in Pennsylvania was born in North Pole, Alaska, and later lived in Anchorage.
Police believe Miranda (Dean) Barbour, 18 – along with husband Elytte, 22 – solicited a man on Craigslist through a “companionship” ad and killed him simply for the thrill.
School records show Miranda Barbour attended several schools around the state, most recently in 2010 as a freshman at Valley Pathways High School in Palmer.
She also applied for Permanent Fund Dividend checks with listed residences in Anchorage and Palmer, most recently in 2012.
The case that has the Barbours in the national spotlight involves Troy LaFerrara, 42, who was stabbed and strangled to death, according to police.
LaFerrara's body was found in the backyard of a home in Sunbury, a small city about 100 miles northwest of Philadelphia, on November 12.
He had been stabbed 20 times and strangled with a cable cord, police said. The last number dialed on his cell phone led police to the Barbours.
Barbour told police he and his wife had tried to kill others, but the previous plans never came together.
Police said Barbour confessed to the crime when presented with evidence they collected, and that she would use Craigslist to meet “men who wanted companionship” and were willing to pay her for it.
On November 11, she met LaFerrara at a mall, picked him up in her red Honda CR-V and drove to Sunbury.
Her husband was hiding under a blanket in the back seat, he said. The couple had agreed on a pre-arranged signal so that he would know when "it was time to kill the victim."
They wanted to kill someone together, police said.
Barbour told police he and his wife had tried to kill others. But the plans didn't work out.
"This," said Sunbury Police Chief Steve Mazzeo, "happened to be one that worked."
She took a knife from between the front seats and stabbed him, she said. Her husband tied a cable cord around his neck to hold his head back.
After they were done, they went to a strip club to celebrate Elytte's 22nd birthday.
"We don't usually have homicides up here. This is a relatively peaceful town," Chief Mazzeo said. "We average a homicide maybe every 18 months to two years, so this is unusual."
The couple faces a host of charges including criminal homicide. Miranda Barbour had a 1-year-old child, and police are also investigating the death of the child’s father.
