A 22-year-old man has been arrested for a January 18th murder in midtown, according to the Anchorage Police Department.

Police alleged that Victor Enrique Garcia killed 21-year-old T.R.E.L. Zawko on the 1300 block of Crescent Drive.

Around 1:30 p.m. that day, police say one of Zawko's roommates found him in the garage bleeding from the head and face.

Shortly after 3:00 p.m. that day, police dispatch received a report of man, later identified as Garcia, walking out of the woods about a half a mile south from the victim's residence with a self-inflicted cut to his neck. Police reported that Garcia was staying in a home near Zawko.

Dani Myren, APD spokesperson, wrote in a statement, "evidence collected at the scene of the homicide included a bent aluminum baseball bat which appeared to have blood on portions of the barrel."

Police say that DNA from the bat was collected and "found to be consistent with the DNA profiles of both Garcia and Zawko."

Garcia has been charged with murder in the second degree with no bail at the Anchorage Jail. If found guilty, then he faces a maximum punishment of 99 years behind bars.

"You want to make sure it's a thorough investigation and as a result of the evidence, we were able to put together a case," Myren said. "Real cases take a long time to put together, and it's not the like movies, but ultimately a case was put together and hopefully this brings closure to the victim's family."
