Alaska State Troopers are investigating the burglary of a home last week in the Southeast Alaska community of Hydaburg, from which roughly $10,000 was taken. According to a Sunday AST dispatch, a report of the incident was given Thursday to village public safety officers in Hydaburg, a village of about 380 people on Prince of Wales Island. “Subsequent investigation revealed that someone entered through a rear-facing window of the house, forced open a safe and stole approximately $10,000 in cash along with a coin collection,” troopers wrote. “After interviewing the victim it was discovered that the burglary had taken place sometime between (Dec. 31) and noon on (Jan. 1).”

AST spokesperson Megan Peters says the cracked safe was 16 inches square and about 18 inches tall.

“It appears that whoever broke in and forced the safe open knew that a large amount of cash was kept there,” Peters wrote in a Monday email on the case. “Alleged suspects have been questioned in regards to the incident." Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact Klawock troopers at 1-800-754-2918.
