A California man was pronounced dead Saturday morning near the Trident cannery in Akutan, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Troopers said 31-year-old Simon Gatpan, of Santa Clara, Calif., was "found unresponsive on the beach near the Trident cannery," Saturday around 8:25 a.m. According to troopers, he was a cannery worker.

Few details were initially released surrounding Gatpan's death, and troopers wrote in a Sunday dispatch that his body will be sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy to determine cause of death.

AST spokesperson Beth Ipsen said that "troopers have yet to arrive in Akutan," as of 12:30 p.m. Sunday, but they were on their way with an investigator with the Alaska Bureau of Investigation. Ipsen also stated that a VPSO in Akutan has helped with the case so far.

According to Trident Seafoods, the Akutan shore plant is the largest seafood production facility in North America and processes over 3 million pounds of multiple species per day and it can house as many as 825 employees.

Akutan is located in the eastern Aleutians, about 35 miles east of Unalaska and 766 air miles southwest of Anchorage, according to the State Dept. of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development.
