The state is taking public comment through May on a proposed Navy SEAL training site on Kodiak Island.

Rick Thompson, a regional manager with the state Division of Mining, Land and Water, says in evaluating the permit application, the state will look at other activities occurring in the area and address any conflicts.

He says the proposed training area is near the Kodiak Launch Complex but he says the boundaries can be adjusted. There are also grazing leases in the area and proposed land sales.

The public notice indicates tracts of state land would be used for Navy SEAL training, including short-term camps for up to 12 people. A five-year permit has been proposed.

Thompson says permits are generally given for five years or one year at a time over five years.
