Anchorage firefighters safely extinguished a chimney fire at a Russian Jack apartment building Sunday evening. Fire crews arrived on scene shortly after 7 p.m., at the 4000 block of East 20th Avenue, and found smoke billowing from a first-floor window and residents evacuating. AFD officials say the blaze started in a chimney, with crews able to quickly knock the fire down and prevent it from spreading. “Fire was going good on the inside of the wall there -- the crews got in there and were able to get a quick stop,” said AFD Battalion Chief Kevin Keene. “It's really important to stress to the homeowners that when we get back into this cold weather again and we've been burning wood all year, they've got to clean their flues out of their chimneys.” Officials suggest residents clean out their chimney at least once a year, with those who are strictly burning wood doing so twice a year.
