The Ketchikan Gateway Borough has filed a lawsuit against the state of Alaska over school funding. The Ketchikan Daily News reports borough members on Friday approved the lawsuit, and it was filed Monday. The state requires all organized boroughs to provide a certain level of the property taxes collected to local school districts. Some assembly members see that as an unconstitutional requirement and one that goes against promises made by the state not to penalize parts of Alaska forced to incorporate. State Rep. Tammie Wilson, a North Pole Republican, has pre-filed a bill to repeal local contributions and put the entire financial burden on the state. She says she believes the Ketchikan borough has a strong case.
