A 50-year-old Togiak man will serve 15 months in prison after taking part in the illegal killing of protected walrus on Round Island. The U.S. attorney's office says in a release that Jessie Anariak received credit for already serving more than a year before sentencing. A co-defendant, Sixty Arkanayak, was sentenced in June to serve more than two years for his part in the killing. Prosecutors say the men fired on a group of walrus in May 2011, wounding five, at the Walrus Islands State Game Sanctuary. Prosecutors say four of the animals escaped into the sea and the fifth was shot until it died. Prosecutors say the men removed the tusks and left the walrus to waste on the beach.
