Firefighters say a Sterling trailer home that didn’t have smoke detectors is likely a total loss after a blaze ripped through it early Thursday morning, leaving a man and a pet cat injured. According to a statement from Central Emergency Services spokesperson Brad Nelson, firefighters were sent to the 33000 block of Scooter Court at about 2:30 a.m. “The first units arrived and observed a trailer style home fully involved in fire with partial roof collapse,” Nelson wrote. “An occupant was able to evacuate the home, but did receive minor burn injuries while trying to fight the fire on his own. He was assessed and released on scene.” While the man was assessed and released by medics, Nelson says the animal’s condition is markedly worse. “We think there might be a loss of one pet, a cat,” Nelson said. “It was pretty seriously injured -- he was going to take it to the vet.” Firefighters kept the blaze from spreading to nearby vehicles and structures. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but crews believe it to be a wood stove which was being used to heat the $43,000 home. Nelson says that while some homes may not be legally required to have smoke detectors, choosing not to install them can have consequences. “When you get outside the city, people can do whatever they want,” Nelson said. “It definitely affects our ability to get there in a timely manner.”
