An Alaska-based soldier from North Carolina has been awarded the Purple Heart. U.S. Army officials say Sgt. Rigoberto Luviano was awarded the medal on Thursday at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson for his combat wounds. The native of Lexington, N.C., was wounded in Afghanistan last year when his vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb. He was deployed with the 109th Transportation Co. His wife, daughters and parents attended the ceremony. He has been reassigned to the Warrior Transition Battalion while he recuperates. Luviano was assigned to the Anchorage base in 2012 after prior postings at Fort Bragg, N.C., and Fort Benning, Ga. His injuries came during his third deployment. He previously served in Kuwait in 2011 and in Iraq in 2005.
