Cleveland Volcano in southwest Alaska is continuing a low-level eruption that began early Saturday.
However, scientists said Monday that the volcanic explosions on a remote, uninhabited island 940 miles southwest of Anchorage appear to be waning.
Cleveland Volcano erupted at 5 a.m. Saturday, followed fairly quickly by two explosions. A nearby seismic network detected long-duration airwave signals that indicated a sustained eruption.
Scientists said satellites and cameras suggested low-level emissions of gas, steam and ash. Satellites also detected highly elevated surface temperatures at the summit. A faint plume of ash extending eastward also was observed.
