Within months, Juneau is expected to have enough electric vehicle charging stations for a driver to go the longest distance possible in the community without fear of losing charge. Alec Mesdag leads an Electric Vehicle Initiative facilitated by the Juneau Economic Development Council. He told the Juneau Empire about $50,000 in grant and donor funds will allow for purchase of six to eight charging stations. Grant funds will cover the charging stations but Mesdag says facilities housing the stations will pay for their installations and resulting utility bills. There are fewer than 15 electric cars in Juneau but Mesdag expects that number to grow. Since Juneau lacks a mechanic certified to work on electric cars, Mesdag says part of the grant money could help a local mechanic receive training.
