The North Slope Borough Police Department said Wednesday that the death of a 13-year-old boy originally reported as a suicide may have been the result of an accidental shooting by another boy.

North Slope police said in a Wednesday release that they responded Tuesday around 3:40 p.m. to a report of a shooting on the 5200 block of Karluk Street, near the corner of Karluk and Ahkovak.

Responding officers found  the 13-year-old boy dead from a gunshot wound to the head.

In the release police say preliminary investigation leads them to believe that the gunshot wound was not self-inflicted.

NSPD wrote that "in this case (the victim) may have been accidentally shot by another juvenile male."

Investigators declined further comment Wednesday as to what led them to believe the shooting was not self-inflicted, nor why they believe the suspect in the shooting is another young boy.

This is a developing story. Watch KTUU broadcasts or check KTUU.com for updates.
