The city of Hooper Bay will pay nearly $1 million to the family of a man who committed suicide in the city jail. KYUK reports the jury Tuesday found the city negligent in the July 2011 death of 22-year-old Louis Bunyan and awarded his family $960,000. Bunyan was in his cell only 40 minutes before he was found hanged from the drawstring on his shorts. His family requested he be put into protective custody since he was drunk and combative. An attorney for his mother argued the city has a duty to screen detainees for suicide potential and make sure they don't have any items to harm themselves. KYUK reports the on-duty officer said in interviews he was using his computer to check Facebook and play online poker.
