A U.S. Air Force staff sergeant was found dead in his Eagle River home, officials at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson announced Wednesday.
Air Force Staff Sgt. Samuel Davis, 33, was pronounced dead by civilian emergency responders at his house Sunday just after 5:40 a.m.
The circumstances surrounding Davis’ death are being investigated by the Air Force Office of Special Investigations and the Anchorage Police Department.
APD spokesperson Dani Myren said responders received a call for service on the 14000 block of the Old Glenn Highway. The woman who called, apparently Davis' girlfriend, stated that he wasn't breathing. The caller told police that Davis was recovering from a recent back surgery.
“There appeared to be nothing suspicious and no foul play is suspected.” Myren said. Crime scene investigators were not called to the scene.
In a release Wednesday, Air Force officials wrote that Davis was an aerospace maintenance craftsman with the 703rd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron. Originally from Spencer, West Virginia, they say he joined the Air Force in April 2000 and arrived at JBER in November 2011.
Air Force officials say a memorial service has been scheduled for Thursday at 9 a.m. in an on-base chapel. Officials say his family has been notified.
Davis is the fourth JBER serviceman found dead this month.
Army Sgt. Okan Murat Cetinbag, 24, died on Feb. 11 from injuries suffered at his on-base home.
Senior Airman Katrina M. Jackson, 22, was pronounced dead Saturday, Feb. 15 from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound on base.
On Feb. 21 Air Force officials also reported the death of 38-year-old Staff Sgt. Darian Miller. Investigators have so far only confirmed that Miller died on base.
