Alaska State Troopers say three people were injured in a two-vehicle Sterling Highway crash Monday afternoon, one of them severely. AST spokesperson Beth Ipsen says the collision, at Mile 155 of the Sterling just after 4 p.m., involved a male driver in a 1998 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck and two people in a 2005 Ford Taurus sedan. The Tacoma's driver apparently wasn't wearing his seat belt.
"It appears that the driver of the Tacoma was ejected, and suffered what could be life-threatening injuries," Ipsen said. "Since he was ejected, they believe he was not (strapped in)."
All three people people in the crash were taken to South Peninsula Hospital in Homer, with a medevac flight to Anchorage being considered for the Tacoma's driver.
"Right now, we're not clear what happened," Ipsen said. "All we know is that the Tacoma was southbound and the Taurus was northbound."
The Sterling was completely closed for about 20 minutes immediately after the crash, with traffic intermittently moving as troopers continued to investigate the scene.
Ipsen says identities for the people in the wreck are being withheld, as troopers first seek to notify the Tacoma driver's next of kin.
