The Senate Education Committee will hear Friday a bill establishing a reading program for young students.
The bill, sponsored by Sen. Gary Stevens, a Republican from Kodiak, establishes a reading program for Kindergarten through third grade students in public schools. It also provides a system of accountability for local school districts.
Senate Bill 107 tries to address reading deficiencies in Alaska students by setting up parameters for local districts to establish reading strategies. It is hoped it will reduce the number of students with reading deficiencies.
Stevens said similar legislation in Colorado has shown positive results
