The state of Alaska is less than a week away from recognizing the 50th anniversary of the Good Friday Earthquake. A 9.2 magnitude quake that claimed the lives of 9 people in Anchorage and approximately 131-people across the state after a tsunami tore through several Alaskan communities. In conjunction the Good Friday commemoration,  for the for the past two Saturdays the Municipality of Anchorage and FEMA have partnered with the Home Depot to encourage Anchorage residents to prepare for the worst through educating and empowering Alaskans to take the steps to respond to a potential disaster. On Saturday all three Home Depot locations in Anchorage offered free earthquake mitigation clinics, advising customers on inexpensive ways to make sure you and your family are prepared. Experts say simple things like water, food, communication devices and a generator are essential for survival, expressing the importance of being ready to fend for yourself for at least seven days following a catastrophic event like the one that took place in anchorage about 50 years ago.  "We know we're remote," said Kean Finnegan, geologist and Home Depot employee.  "So we know that we have to do a little more due diligence and make sure we are prepared.  We have a lot of people in this state that are resilient, but we can always find other ways to secure our home a little better, to just be ready to make sure everyone else in the household knows what to do in case there's an earthquake." Mitigation clinics will be held at all three of the Home Depot Anchorage locations again next Saturday March 29th.
