The Senate Education Committee Monday began hearings on a bill that will establish different teacher tenure tracks for urban and rural Alaska. House Bill 162, sponsored by Representative Tammie Wilson, a Republican from North Pole, calls for changing the number of years of service before tenure will be offered to a public school teacher from three years to five years. The change would only affect Anchorage, Fairbanks North Star Borough, Juneau, Mat-Su Borough, Kodiak Island Borough, Ketchikan Gateway Borough and Mount Edgecumbe. However, the bill calls for the length of time for teachers in rural Alaska to obtain tenure to be three years only as a means of attracting new teachers to rural Alaska. The bill remains in committee.
