Anchorage firefighters responded to a couple of home fires Saturday morning in the Russian Jack and Muldoon areas.
The fires were unrelated and happened at separate times, according to the Anchorage Fire Department.
Firefighters received calls from the first blaze around 8:30 a.m. at a trailer near Hoyt Street in the Russian Jack neighborhood.
The blaze left five people homeless and firefighters suspect flammable material may have been too close to a heater.
"Luckily these people were awake," said AFD Capt. Jess Warner, Station 3. "Smoke detectors did not alert the occupants, they did not have any."
The second fire happened around 10:30 a.m. at a home on the 8200 block of Peck Ave in Muldoon, according to AFD.
Firefighters said the blaze appeared to start in the kitchen area and was contained to that area of the house and smoke detectors alerted the only person inside the home at the time.
"On arrival, APD (Anchorage Police Department) was the first to arrive and they were able to rescue a dog from the structure before it died," said AFD Capt. Jess Warner.
There were no reported injuries in either fire.
