Kodiak is welcoming the return of gray whales during spring migration with a city celebration.
The weeklong 17th annual Whale Fest begins this weekend.
The Kodiak Daily Mirror reports (http://is.gd/l9tfRk) killer whales can be seen in waters around Kodiak all year. But Eastern Pacific Gray Whales only show up twice a year.
Their visits come during the long migration of any mammal on earth. The whales begin the migration off Mexico and end in the Arctic Ocean.
The banner for Whale Fest 2013 features a whale in the colors of the Mexican, American, Canadian and Alaska flags. The theme is" Migration Without Borders."
The main event will be a whale-watching hike Sunday.
