The director of the Alpine Adventure Run has been identified as the hiker who broke her hip in a fall near Sitka and had to be medically evacuated.
The Daily Sitka Sentinel reports 62-year-old Chris Horan was hiking the race course Sunday with her husband, Charles Horan.
He says she was about 30 yards ahead of him, and called out she spotted a bear. He says she took a few steps, lost her footing and fell.
She was taken by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter to a Sitka hospital, where the extent of her injuries were found. She is awaiting surgery for the hip at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage.
The race is a popular 7-mile run that draws participants from across the country.
