The Anchorage Fire Department launched a water rescue for a man who went missing near the Cook Inlet mudflats.
Two men attempted to walk towards Fire Island and were caught in the water tides around 4:30 p.m. Sunday, according to AFD. A witness from Kincaid placed the initial call around 4:26 p.m. about the men caught on the mudflats.
One man made it to shore safely and the other man remained missing as of 8:30 p.m. when rescuers called off the search.
AFD set-up a command center around 5:00 p.m. at Kincaid. The Coast Guard and Alaska State Troopers were contacted to assist in the search.
A LifeMed helicopter, tugs, and a cargo ship also helped search the waters for the missing person.
The identities of the men walking on the mudflats were not immediately known.
"All water in Alaska is very cold and you become hypothermic very fast, within a matter of minutes," AFD Capt. Mark Monfore said. "So survivability - the longer the time goes, the less chance of survivability there is."
