The Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium in Tacoma euthanized a 25-year-old northern sea otter on Monday after an exam showed she had serious medical issues.
The zoo says the otter named Homer was believed to be the last surviving sea otter that was rescued after the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska.
She was found near Homer and taken to the Tacoma zoo. About three-dozen rescued sea otters were placed in zoos and aquariums around the country.
