Anchorage police found a gun in a suspect's car that matched the bullet casings that left a man in critical condition in a Monday morning shooting in Fairview, according to charging documents.

Neville Xavier Herndon, 31, allegedly shot Devontae Mickeal, a man police described in his 20s, around 2 a.m. near Medfra St and E 13th Ave. Police were near the area on LaTouche St and E 13th Ave and reached the victim three minutes later in an alley on the west side of Medfra St.

Police found Mickeal with multiple gunshot wounds to his abdomen, left leg, right leg and left arm. Court papers say, "Mickeal was unable to provide much information to the officers." He was taken to an area hospital and treated for his injuries.

According to charging documents, written by Assistant Attorney General Clinton Campion, police questioned Herndon in a vehicle near the area of the shooting at the intersection of 13th Ave and Medfra St.

"Herndon told the officers that there was a gun in his vehicle," Campion wrote in charging documents. "The officers saw the gun lying on the floor board on the front passenger side of the vehicle. A witness who had seen the shooting positively identified Herndon as the shooter."

Police obtained a search warrant on the vehicle. Court papers say, "a magazine was found in the back seat of Herndon's vehicle which matched the shell casings found near where Mickeal was shot."

"During the search, a firearm was seized which was the same caliber as the shell casings was found near Mickeal," Campion wrote. "The firearm appeared to have dried blood."

Herndon was charged with first degree assault and driving with a suspended or revoked license. He has previous criminal convictions for assault and drugs dating back to 2005 and 2009.

"We don't believe this was a random thing," Jennifer Castro, police spokesperson, said in a Monday interview.
