A California camp counselor died Monday night at a Wasilla summer camp for children, after Alaska State Troopers say he ran into trouble while swimming.

According to AST spokesperson Beth Ipsen and a Wednesday trooper dispatch, troopers responded at about 10:30 p.m. to the Salvation Army's King's Lake camp at 3313 E Lakeview Rd., where 32-year-old Jorge Castaneda of Moreno Valley, Calif. was lying on the ground.

Ipsen says that Castaneda's condition suddenly deteriorated during a late-night swim, and he was declared dead by Wasilla medics at the scene as troopers arrived.

"He was swimming with other counselors; they noticed he was having difficulties," Ipsen said. "They got him to shore and he collapsed."

The camp's website says that it offers week-long residential camping programs for children ages 7 to 17 during the summer, "designed for children to experience the love of God through the great outdoors."

In a statement released Wednesday afternoon by the Salvation Army, divisional commander Maj. George Baker offered condolences to Castaneda's family and colleagues.

"Jorge was an outstanding camp counselor and The Salvation Army is incredibly (saddened) by his death," Baker wrote. "We are asking for prayers to be sent out to Jorge's family and his fellow camp staff members during this difficult time."

Troopers say no foul play is suspected in Castaneda's death, but the incident is under investigation. His body has been sent to the state medical examiner's office for an autopsy, and his next of kin have been notified.
