The United States Coast Guard will give free tours of the Polar Star, a 399-foot refurbished ice breaker, in Juneau.

The tours will be part of the USCG's open house on Saturday, August 3 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the AJ dock. Community members will get to tour the ship and ask crew members questions while on board.

The ship has been used to support scientific missions both in the Arctic and Antarctic. The vessel has also performed tasks, such as search and rescue, ship escort, environmental protection and the enforcement of laws and treaties in the Polar Regions.

"The Polar Star came up to Alaska this summer to get back into service," USCG Petty Officer 3rd Class Grant DeVuyst said. "It had some work done on it, just got back underway for the first time this summer."

The ice breaker is home ported in Seattle and was commissioned back in 1976 and has been out of service for years.
