7 years and $21 million later - the Covenant House will soon open its doors at its new downtown location.
On Sunday, Archbishop Emeritus Frances T. Hurley held a blessing ceremony to usher in the new building, located at 8th Ave and A St.
The Covenant House has provided shelter and other services to homeless, runaway, and at-risk teens for nearly 25 years. The new building has numerous state of the art facilities, including a music room, new computer room and rooms dedicated to teach youth how to dress and prepare for job interviews.
"We also believe that this project has been blessed, and the one of the things we do is we meet kids where they are." said Alison Kear, Executive Director of Covenant House Alaska. "Often times, it's to have that faith and say we have a covenant with them and to say we're here for you and we love you unconditionally."
Covenant House Alaska will hold an official opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, Aug. 6 from 5-7 p.m. when many kids will get to walk through the facility for the first time.
