Ketchikan Borough Assembly Endorses Ferry Option

The Ketchikan Gateway Borough Assembly is backing off its long-standing support of what has been derisively labeled a "bridge to nowhere," instead supporting increased ferry service between Ketchikan and Gravina Island.

KRBD reports the assembly voted this week to direct the borough manager to submit comments to Alaska's transportation department endorsing Alternative G4. That alternative calls for new ferry ramps and improved facilities beside existing ferry terminals.

The department recently proposed six "build" alternatives to improve access between Ketchikan and Gravina Island, which is the where the Ketchikan International Airport is located. There are two bridge and four ferry options, plus a no-action alternative.

The Ketchikan City Council also recently voted in favor of ferry Alternative G4, citing concerns with how the proposed bridges would affect cruise ship traffic.
