A man was seriously injured in a single-vehicle rollover crash on the Glenn Highway near Mirror Lake Wednesday night, which Anchorage police say closed the highway for nearly an hour.
APD spokesperson Jennifer Castro says police were informed of the crash, in the vicinity of the Mirror Lake offramp from the Glenn, just after 8:52 p.m.
"When police were on-scene they discovered a single vehicle collision and a male driver who had been ejected from the car," Castro wrote in a Thursday email to Channel 2. "Police were able to determine that the driver lost control of the vehicle, hitting a guard rail, the vehicle rolled multiple times and landed in the median."
A photo from the scene, sent to Channel 2 by viewer Derek Newman, shows a gray vehicle lying on its back between the highway's northbound and southbound lanes, apparently missing its left front wheel.
The driver, whom APD hasn't yet identified as of Thursday morning, was flown by air ambulance to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
"The highway was shutdown in both directions for about 50 minutes, so the helicopter could safely land and transport the driver to the hospital," Castro wrote.
Castro thanked drivers who were forced to wait on the highway during APD's response to the crash site.
