State Threatens to Pull Hoonah Dock Money over Location

State officials are threatening to withdraw funding for a $15 million dock in Hoonah unless the site is moved.

CoastAlaska reports that the state Legislature provided the funding in part to support the Icy Strait Point tourist attraction.

But state Community and Regional Affairs Director Scott Ruby says the cruise industry doesn't like the location currently planned by local officials. He says the primary use of the dock was to be for cruise ships, and in the off season, it could be used for such things as ferries and freight.

Ruby has put a hold on any project spending.

Alternate sites have been deemed acceptable by the industry.

Hoonah's city administrator declined comment until local officials were able to meet with the state.
