A stretch of trail in the upcoming Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race is being rerouted because of poor trail conditions. The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner says the route is being changed between Eagle and Canada's Dawson City in the Yukon Territory. Race officials decided to change the route after trailbreakers reported that the stretch over the 3,420-foot American Summit is impassable in many areas. Participants in the race that begins Saturday in Fairbanks will now follow the Yukon River upstream to Fortymile. The reroute will remove about 50 miles from the 1,000-mile race. Nineteen mushers are set to compete in the race to Whitehorse, Yukon.
