East High School has been selected as a recipient of the 2014 Top AFS School award for its efforts in exchange programs for students.
AFS-USA is a non-profit organization with international exchange programs in more than 40 countries. Schools recognized with the Top AFS School award have partnered with AFS-USA to promote learning and interaction both domestically and abroad.
79 high schools from around the country were selected for this year's award. East High School is Alaska's only recipient of the award for 2014, highlighting a legacy of hosting 32 students from 19 countries, and sending abroad 9 students to 6 countries.
"We're so thankful and proud to work in educational partnerships with schools like East," says Tonya Muro, the Director of School Outreach and Educational Partnerships at AFS-USA.
"These educators are at the forefront of bring global awareness and intercultural experiences to their students. In doing so, they are providing students, teachers, and the greater community profound opportunities to broaden their knowledge of other cultures and peoples, which is indispensable in this day and age."
Along with the Top AFS School award, scholarships and financial aid are also given by AFS to more than 2,400 students in the US and abroad.
